Baldwin City is the home of the oldest univeristy in the State of Kansas, Baker University. Baldwin City began as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail known as Palmyra. Baldwin City had a population of 4,515 as of the 2010 census.

Baldwin City is best known for the festival held each fall called The Maple Leaf Festival. The Maple Leaf festival has been held the third full week in October every year since 1957. It has grown into the largest festival in the area and pulls in crowds of around 30,000 people. The festival is held to celebrate the harvest and the beautiful fall foliage. The festival hosts a parade, arts and crafts, live preformances and a history tour.
